Teaching TLE - Basic Electrical Installation

Before Teaching TLE Electrical Installation

As a son of a contractor who was exposed to construction work at a young age, the field of electrical work is something I find an exciting profession. So in 2017, I pursued learning how to do electrical installation works and include it in my arsenal of skills and knowledge. In the same year as I seek to learn electrical installation, I also worked on my diploma in professional education (DPE) course. Taking electrical installation is also part of my goal to acquire a national certificate (NC2) so that when I’m able to teach basic education I can teach social studies and electrical courses. In this way, I can maximize how I spent my time back in 2017 and also prepare for different possibilities in the future.

Teaching TLE in 2019

2 years after acquiring my NC2 certificate in electrical Installation (EIM) I was given the chance to teach TLE 9 basic Electrical Installation. I first of all didn’t expect to be teaching EIM since after 2 years I have been so focused on social studies. The new school I applied the Philippine Christian Gospel School (PCGS) has offered me to teach the subject at first, I was hesitant but with God’s blessing, I’m able to reflect and see it as an opportunity to reacquire some of the forgotten learning I have in the field of EIM.

Lesson Plans, Activities, and The Students

Yes, TLE is one of the important subjects in basic education, and teaching the grade 9 students about EIM excites me since I’ll be able to express and also simulate what I have learned while I was in the Department of manpower development and Placement (DMDP). In TLE 9 I have to design and prepare my lesson approach and make sure the students will be safe and everything we do will be basic. So teaching TLE 9 is not as complicated as acquiring the EIM NC2 since it is mostly focused on lectures and theories (and some hands-on activities).

The activities I have prepared for grade 9 are listed below:

1.    Wire Splicing

2.    Electrical tools and consumables

3.    Safety procedures (Maybe I’ll learn COSH/BOSH in the future)

4.    Electrical Theories and computation

5.    Electrical connection and actual wiring

6.    Electrical Plans, Wiring Plans, Electrical Drawings

7.    Dioramas and presentation of electrical plans

The grade 9 students find the subject challenging and interesting. In TLE, I’m able to see that students do not just want to read and talk most of the time, they also want to make use of their hands and see what they can craft. The beauty of teaching TLE is in the procedural process and witnessing the final output of following the procedures.

Probably The Finale of Teaching EIM

In 2020 the pandemic became a challenging year in the field of education due to some subjects requiring actual face-to-face classes. EIM is one of those subjects that the teacher needs to be present in conducting activities for safety reasons and proper guidance in class procedures. This pandemic has made me rusty and I somehow forgot some of the EIM practices. But still, I can’t say it’s the end for me in this EIM journey and only God knows what the future has in store for me.
