How it started

My journey as a tour guide is the result of years spent reading various local history books and articles. My perseverance in learning and absorbing the values of history has qualified me to become one of the history majors who participate in tour guiding.

As tours have become part of class activities in some history subjects, such as Philippine History and Rizal Classes, the history department of the university is in need of tour guides and marshals to assist students in learning about the heritage of Cebu.

The first tour

My first tour happened unexpectedly when I participated in a required heritage tour along with other college students. A close friend of mine who was assigned as a tour guide realized they needed a tour marshal, and recruited me for the role.

Thus, on my first tour, I served as a tour marshal, leading small groups and explaining various aspects of the heritage site.

Heritage training and exposure

During my second year as a History Major student, local history seminars and training sessions became a common occurrence. Learning from various Cebu Local Historians and conducting our own research on the society, culture, and history of Cebu has sharpened my skills as a learner. I am grateful to my professors in the Carolinian Historical Society, who have worked hard to show us the beauty of learning history. Institutions that support local history, such as the Ramon Aboitiz Foundation Inc., have sponsored and initiated most of the local history training and events.

The constant exposure to training, seminars, and research has closely linked me to the values and importance of learning history. Together with my history major colleagues, I have had the opportunity to take photos, travel, and engage in wonderful conversations with different people during our training, seminars, and research.

The Kabilin Tours

The Kabilin tours have been a memorable part of my tour guiding journey and experience. It is through this institution that I have felt and witnessed how much people appreciate me as a history major. It brings me great joy to be valued and appreciated when they learn something from me, whether as a tour guide or a tour marshal.

The joy of conducting tour guides motivates me to continue learning more about local history and conducting research to find information that can entertain or capture the interest of the students.

How it ends

My tour guiding journey came to an end as I finished college. I had hoped to pursue a career in tour guiding, but financial constraints and the seasonal nature of the field in Cebu made it difficult to do so. After college, my goal was to become self-sufficient, but I found it challenging. Instead of pursuing my dream of becoming a tour guide, I got recruited into the BPO industry, specifically at Convergys Cebu, because of the high salary it offered.

I spent a year in the BPO industry, but it prevented me from fulfilling my goal of becoming a tour guide. After a year, I decided to enter the teaching field.
